Haircare with a pinch of salt

Has the change of season done a doozy on those locks of yours? Try Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion Oil and Salt Spray to get soft, sea-tossed waves with sheen and tousled texture thanks to the sea mineral complex it contains. It’s perfect for those who need extra conditioning and it contains UV filters to guard against the drying effects of the sun. Unfortunately, this top-secret beauty quick-fix can be quite hard to find, but a little birdie told us you can buy it at Want It All, one of our favourite online shops.

Turn up the heat

Red, orange and coral are hot hues for summer. Our favourite way to wear them? On our lips and nails of course! From bashful to bold, there is a multitude of shades to play with … though bright is just so much fun! Top of our list: Morgan Taylor’s Manga Round With Me, R134, an eye-catching coral for nails, and Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Envy Hi-Lustre lipstick in Drop Dead Red, R395, a fiery statement-maker! PS. For A-list inspiration, check out these pics of Alexa Chung, Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lawrence …

It’s common for hair to take strain this time of year, particularly if you’re styling it more often (hello party season!) and spending weekends in the pool. Danielle Jacobs, hair stylist and make-up artist, recommends these products to keep your locks in tip top shape, all summer long … • Kerastase Discipline Fluidissime Spray, R405, tames frizz and protects against heat from the sun and styling aids. Simply shake and spray onto towel-dried hair for a natural, healthy looking shine. • Pureology Serious Colour Care Perfect 4 Platinum Miracle Filler Treatment, R350, is ideal for highlighted and fragile blonde hair. It fills porous gaps in the hair strands, conditions and clarifies, and provides increased strength with regular use. Spray onto damp hair daily. It can also be used as a blow-dry reparative lotion. • Coconut oil, a fantastic natural alternative! Apply at room temperature to your hair, from the roots to the tips, for a deep conditioning treatment. Cover with a shower cap or towel and allow it to soak in for at least 30 minutes (use the time to read a book or catch up on your favourite series, guilt-free!). Coconut oil keeps hair hydrated and prevents colour treatments from fading too quickly.

Timeless hair trend… OR Potty about plaits …

From pool to party, runway to red carpet, plaited hairstyles have endured the test of time and remain a chic choice for summer 2016, says hairstylist Danielle Jacobs. “Braids are always cool and can easily be adapted for the beach, office or evening out on the town. Plus, there is a style to suit all tastes, hair textures and lengths.” Take your cue from a few of Danielle’s favourite pics below…

Beauty travel essentials OR Brilliant beauty buys for your holiday

Heading off on holiday? No need to schlep your entire beauty cupboard. These six essentials, recommended by beauty blogger Leigh van den Berg of  Lip Gloss is My Life will cover all bases (and leave you with enough luggage space to shop!).

“When it comes to a holiday I always head for a sunny location near the sea, so I’ve become a bit of a pro when it comes to packing a bag full of summer beauty essentials and these are the products I’ll be popping into my suitcase…

First up, is Heliocare gel SPF 50 (R320, Dermastore.co.za). I’ve got a combination skin and love that this serves up a high SPF, feels like nothing on, doesn’t aggravate my oilies or cause my skin to break out.

My favourite way to bronze is via The Tan Lab self-tan in Dark (R320, TheTanLab.co.za). I slap it on before I go and touch up half way through. The colour’s deep but incredibly natural-looking, it doesn’t have a horrible smell when it develops and lasts longer before fading away more evenly than other products I’ve used in the past.

Forget hassling with powders that can break and a brush to apply them with. When I travel, I like to keep my complexion matte with Palladio rice paper oil-absorbing blotting tissues (R69,95, Dis-Chem)
and add colour to my cheeks and lips with Revlon ColorBurst balm stain (R155, Clicks).

You can’t travel without facial wipes. They’re great for on the plane as well as the beach. I’m a big fan of Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths (R89,95, Dis-Chem) as they’re infused with the same ultra-mild formula you’ll find in Cetaphil’s gentle cleanser. They don’t irritate or dry out my skin but remove make-up and dirt like a boss.

Last, but not least, one of my new loves is Skinceuticals Phyto Corrective mask (R995, Dermastore.co.za). It’s a super soothing, cooling and hydrating mask that contains an ingredient that reduces your skin’s perception to heat. After a long flight or a day spent in the sun this is a rescue remedy at its best.

Two easy ways to beach proof your skin and hair

Don’t let sun, sea and sand ruin your summer look. With these quick tips, you can keep your skin and hair in tip top shape, no matter how many times you hit the beach or pool.

  1. Hydrate – and yes, that means drinking water. Lots of it, especially if you sweat! It also means hydrating your skin from the outside in by showering post-pool or sea with a moisturising body wash, and then slathering on moisturiser (preferably unscented as the sun can make skin sensitive). Make sure you condition your locks after swimming too – use a wide-tooth comb to brush the product through and allow your hair to dry natural after rinsing if possible.
  2. Protect – There’s no denying a golden glow is gorgeous, but sunburn isn’t cool or clever. Make sure you pack SPF and reapply it regularly. Choose a sunscreen with zinc oxide to reduce grease and opt for a natural brand such as Oh-Lief or Badger if you’re conscious of chemical toxins. Don’t forget to protect your lips too. It goes without saying that a hat (wide-brimmed or cap) counts as a must-have accessory, while an SPF hair spray is a nice add on. (Avoid nasty knots by swimming with your hair in a braid – it’ll keep frizz at bay too).
