Treat yourself… to a home spa

Let’s face it, holiday-ready bodies require pre-holiday admin (well for most of us anyway!) and the best way to do that is a top-to-toe treatment that’ll have you glowing and sun-kissed before you’re even said “Hello Summer!” So run a bath, light a candle, turn off your phone, and settle down for some well-deserved me-time. A word of advice, don’t think ‘snag list’ when you prep yourself for that home spa, think ‘hang in there nature, here comes a helping hand!’

Go Pro

Obviously the beauty houses have a line-up of delectable products with ingredients not available to the lady in the street, so what better reason (if you really need one) to indulge in a few! Here are some proper treats that we’re currently loving:

An all-in-one detoxifying treatment, any beauty routine will be enhanced with this fast-acting, easy-to-remove Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Mask. Active ingredients including charcoal, volcanic ash, sea silt, bamboo extract and AHA adsorb impurities, exfoliate, refine pores and promote cell turnover for a dramatically brighter skin. Formulated without artificial fragrances, colours or parabens, this detoxifying and invigorating mask is suitable for all skin conditions and addresses signs of skin aging, breakouts and sensitivity all at once for a visibly revitalised skin. Yes please! www.dermalogica.co.za

With SPF 8 and a huge number of healing properties, Nimue’s Active Hand Repair improves skin texture, exfoliates dead, damaged skin and has an enhanced moisture retaining capacity. Active ingredients such as Kigelia Africana and AHAs also assist in several skin conditions including psoriasis, eczema, solar keratosis, age spots and skin rashes. Besides coating your hands in it during a home-mani, keep it in your handbag, your vanity and all over your house – and apply a thick layer just before bed for a night-time treatment.

Another summer gem is Nimue’s Vitamin C Moisture Mist. This no-mess, no-fuss spritzer adds instant hydration and refreshment, as well as containing UVA protection, antioxidants which assist in reducing signs of ageing, and Vitamin C which stimulates the production of collagen. So for better elasticity and radiant and a hydrated skin, start with a spray under your foundation, and treat yourself to a blast or two whenever you need to freshen up. Nimue products are available at Nimue stockists countrywide.

Hitting the bottle

We all know about the damage caused by the sun, no need to lose your summer glow though – scroll down for the secrets to an infallible faux tan…

  1. SCRUB UP. Yes, you’ve no doubt heard it before, but proper exfoliation will make a huge difference to just how real that fake tan looks. A gentle and thorough scrub before you spray will lift all those dead skin cells and reveal receptive ready-to-tan skin beneath. Steer clear of oil based exfoliators though, as they tend to act as a film on the skin and hamper the penetration of you tanning product.
  2. WAX LYRICAL. Get any waxing done at least 24 hour before you tan. This ensures the skin has calmed and any nicks have healed.
  3. COLD SHOWER. If you’re able to take a shower just before you tan, try a blast of cold water as you finish. It closes the pores reducing the chances of them getting blocked and making for a smoother look.
  4. Keep your tan looking glossy and smooth with a healthy application of moisturiser. Only start 12 hours later though, once your tan has settled in.
  5. FINISHING SCHOOL. Get a real pro look by using your tan product to sculpt the areas that you want to accentuate. Try shading underneath the collarbones, underneath the bicep indent, the outer torso and in between the thighs. Then highlight your tan with an illuminator, think shoulders, collarbones, cheekbones and the front of your legs to create sheen and definition.

Set the scene

You’ve got the product – now get the place looking suitably sensational.

Six quick fixes to get your bathroom fit for a queen.

  • A lick of paint is generally cost effective and can work wonders in a bathroom. A semi-gloss or gloss paint with a mould inhibitor is a good choice – it’s also easy to wipe clean and handles a moist environment. Don’t shy away from a bold colour either – it’ll add huge drama, and it’s easy enough to repaint if you really don’t like it.
  • Trick a small space big with an oversize mirror. It will add loads of extra light too.
  • Indulge in good quality towels and bathmats and add some essential oils to keep the room smelling good.
  • Swap the hanging towels for small rolled up individual towels stored on a decorative tray or basket. Add a separate basket or bin to throw the towels into so they can be washed and reused.
  • Think of accessories and cosmetics as a work of art. A beautifully grouped selection of perfume bottles or an array of towels on an open shelf adds colour and a touch of luxury. Include a tray of goodies – such as tissues, a scented diffuser, mints, a room spray, or perhaps a fragrance or two. Treat yourself to luxury hand and body soaps and hand cream. Present these in pretty dishes, on a tray or in a unique decanter (buy liquid soap and washes and decant to avoid brand labels spoiling your look).
  • Update handles and knobs – we get so used to the knobs and handles we use every day that we hardly notice them – but a quick change can make a huge difference.

Soft touch

Five star white towels don’t just happen by chance. Says Kim Tomlinson of Holland House B&B, add a dash of Handy Andy and a dash of Domestos to your normal wash – make that a long hot wash of course. Hang towels out to dry in the sun, but just before they are done, pop them into the tumble-drier for a fluffy finish.

 9

Night cap

Soak a clean facecloth in piping hot water. Squeeze it out and spray with your favourite relaxing oil (lavender, vanilla and rosemary are all wonderfully destressing aromas). Put the cloth to your face and take a deep breath. Wipe your hands with it too. A great way to unwind before a beauty treatment or before bed. It helps clear the sinuses too.

10

Aroma-therapy

Try this combo of essential oils from Rain in your bathroom. Stir half and half peppermint/eucalyptus oils into a jar of coarse salt, heat in a diffuser or add a drop on the inside cardboard of your toilet rolls. We love it and bet you will too. www.rainafrica.com
